Whispers of a Distant Storm

Whispers of a Distant Storm is an art project that aims to let participants experience the wonders of very low frequency (VLF) radio. Our VLF radio receives 0-20KHz radio waves and converts it to sound. The vast majority of the sounds you hear from that spectrum are the result of the broadband electromagnetic radiation emitted by lightning strikes from around the world. 

As you're listening, the initial onslaught of clicks and pops (each representing a lightning strike) give way to more subtle tweeks and the rare whistler, each of which telling its own story about how it made its way to the antenna.
